Walking the Walk: Nancy and Katherine Heigl

2011-11-11 by Lindsay Taub

It’s not every day that you see a Hollywood movie star in an animal shelter. It’s even more rare to see one handing over millions of dollars to have an impact on a problem of which most in our country are quite frankly unaware — pet overpopulation and the millions of animals euthanized each year as a result.

Over the past two years, I’ve had the honor, privilege, and heartbreak of working alongside some of the country’s most inspiring, hard-working philanthropists who not only talk the talk, but also walk the walk. In the case of Katherine Heigl and her mother, Nancy, their efforts for animal welfare issues are impressive to say the least. They not only want to be part of the solution, they want to inspire others to take action and join them. They don’t do it for the television cameras or the publicity. They do it simply because they care and feel a responsibility to act.

Nancy, in particular, is moved to tears by each and every animal that has to suffer as a result of human neglect, mistreatment, or abuse. She is a champion for animals in Los Angeles and beyond, always spearheading new initiatives that seek to educate the public about their ignorance or lack of understanding about why this isn’t just about pets, but about society and economics as well.

Launching their Compassion Revolution last year, the Heigl Foundation committed more than $1 million towards low-cost or no-cost spay and neuter programs in the greater Los Angeles area, in addition to arranging numerous transports that took animals at risk off doggie death row to safety in homes, fosters, and no-kill shelters around the country.

Last week, the Heigls announced their latest initiative, the Fall 5000. Read about it here.
