I’m starting to have a love affair with Twitter. Facebook is my friend and when I post something, I get super excited, however superficial and unimportant, to see who “likes” it and comments on it. But at least for me, I pretty much know who is on my Facebook. Twitter, on the other hand, is out there in cyberspace and the connection to people I follow or who follow me is for the most part, random and disjointed. Sometimes it makes sense. I work with Cesar Millan, so naturally people in the dog world who are Cesar fans may follow me or retweet my tweets. But as I learn more and more about how to really use Twitter, I am having an absolute blast with it, and seeing the @mentions and followers build up is like wining a prize in some very narcissistic, relatively meaningless, and nonetheless entertaining way.

Twitter Follow Achiever

Case in point. I was recently in Maui. (See “A few days in paradise.”) I took a photo of the sunset, posted it on Twitpic, and later that evening saw that @DailyMauiPhoto had retweeted it. Special, right? It put a simple smile on my face, as I thought one, “how did they find me?,” and two, “awww, they like my photo!” Next, I see Hank Azaria at the pool, and I’m not going to “friend” him on Facebook, but I am going to mention on twitter that @HankAzaria is sitting next to me at the pool, secretly hoping he’s going to check his blackberry, look around, and say, “Hey, did you just tweet me?” No such luck.
